After waxing lyrical about my new toy yesterday I After waxing lyrical about my new toy yesterday I was asked by a number of people what it was that I had added to my camera bag; fair question, I guess

For the past three years I have been hauling around a Canon 100 - 400 4.5 - 5.6. Wonderful lens but I was feeling it was no longer appropriate for my needs — particularly late on a winter afternoon shooting rugby when I require an ability to access as much light as possible; time to move on

So whilst having a pre - Christmas coffee with my mentor (you know who you are!) I asked what lens he would suggest as a potential replacement…and his suggestion was the Canon EF 400 f2.8L IS III USM

Two days later I picked up my Christmas present to myself

This post is again from last week’s session at Tamarama and will (even if today’s images are a little samey!), I trust, show why I cannot wait to get back out in the heat and rain once more. Now I just need to find some sport to photograph

Hopefully only 17 sleeps to go
Prior to Christmas I picked up a new toy — then Prior to Christmas I picked up a new toy — then everything went to pot and there wasn’t much opportunity to use it

Fast forward to last week and finally the planets aligned — not that the surf was great but at least there was reason to grab the lens and head out to see what it could do

And, having done that, I am so excited I can hardly wait for the new school term to begin, strap it on and start using it every week!

Lots of action in a very competitive game — and with both sides playing some seriously final-worthy basketball

All of which go to prove that it doesn’t matter whether you are young or old the basics of the game remain the same

A serious member of the both the local community and the broader Australian basketball world

And early in December it was my task to cover matches being played on the same day, over three venues and featuring teams ranging in age from 18 year olds down to the Under 10’s

Significantly different skill sets but all displaying the same degree of passion for the game

A win to The Roar but not before they were given a bit of a fright

Given today’s images you might say it was a handy match for them to win (Dad joke - sorry about that)

And before anyone asks…yes, it is!
And so after a bit of a break it’s time to get s And so after a bit of a break it’s time to get stuck back in — and, you will note, with a slightly changed format than that which I have used in the past

Why, you might ask? Just a case of waking up one day and deciding that if I am “paying” for the space I might as well use as much of it as I can! And, hopefully, it will show off my images a little better as well

Prior to Christmas I photographed the finals of the Easts Basketball League (EBL) competition in Sydney. Players ranged in age from Under 10’s through to 18 year olds meaning skills varied from game to game

And, yes, that was a bit of a challenge but given the way 2020 went seemed highly appropriate
And, just like that, it is almost over — and it And, just like that, it is almost over — and it appears we made it!

Whilst it took more resilience and persistence than usual it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of a lot of people — family, friends, mentors, clients, and all those who follow peterwade.photography on these pages

And each one of those has, in their own way, given me lots of reasons to keep moving forward and head down a path that only a short while back would not have seemed a sensible thing to do

It is only early but the signs for 2021 look promising and, pandemic or other surprises aside, I am excited as to what the new year may bring - and look forward to returning in a few weeks raring to get stuck in

May your Christmas be full of happiness and joy
I didn’t manage to cover many soccer matches in I didn’t manage to cover many soccer matches in 2020 which means there are not a great number of images for me to share

Nonetheless, a few more from this year — vs Kings and Sydney Grammar — to close out my (sparse!) soccer memories with, hopefully, more coming in season 2021
