A few images from the Scots vs Newington 2nd XV match — a game that was in doubt until the final whistle but saw Scots hold on to win, 21 19

Playing winter sport in late September can be hard

Playing winter sport in late September can be hard work with temperatures starting to become a touch too high for such physical activity and grounds hardening up

But the good news was that that made for some free flowing rugby and a high scoring game

The final result was a victory for Scots - their third on the trot - defeating Newington 55 12

A great way to end the season

Normally at this time I would be posting images that were created earlier in the day

Not so on this occasion given the final GPS match for 2020 was played last Wednesday

I began editing those from that match vs Newington today and there are plenty to post despite the fact the curtain has come down

And whilst the theme of today’s post is rather obvious, if you don’t succeed in understanding what it is then please try, try try, try, try, try again

Standing on the sidelines throughout the season ha

Standing on the sidelines throughout the season has been an eye opener for me

Being so close to the action there have been occasions where I have felt the thumps, whacks and bumps as if I was positioned in the middle of the pitch

The ferocity of some tackles leaving me shaking my head in disbelief that those laying them are still, after all, only schoolboys…and the tackled player isn’t severely injured — or maybe even dead — but is able to get up and run off to prepare for the next onslaught

But, despite that, I do have my favourites — and that is when the players decide it’s time to go into airborne mode

In addition to images from the four Open games (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 8th XV) we have also uploaded those featuring the U14A, U13B, U13C and U13D teams

It seems a bug has crept into the system as not all matches are loading directly to the Recent Shoots page as they should (something for me to work on during the school holidays I guess!)

In the absence of that capability the best way to locate images of those matches you may wish to view is to go to either the Image Search page and use keywords (e.g Riverview 13C) or the Gallery tab dropdown menu and click on “Rugby”

We hope to have photos from yesterday’s Newington matches uploaded by Sunday evening at worst but will, as always, notify you through our Instagram feed

The longest rugby season in GPS history finally co

The longest rugby season in GPS history finally concluded today — and what a way to finish it!

The record books will show the 1sts winning their third match in a row and the 2nd XV getting back in the winners circle — and, with those victories, giving everyone plenty of reason to look forward to season 2021

And, just to top things off, the Captain scored a try which, if I remember correctly, is his first for the year

This past weekend I watched some of the Under 13 a

This past weekend I watched some of the Under 13 and Under 14 matches against Riverview through the viewfinder of my camera. Nothing strange about that other than I don’t usually get the chance to take images of such teams

But if I didn’t know better — and ignored the fact the players were clearly smaller and younger than those I usually photograph — the passion, enthusiasm and excitement of the players was every bit as obvious as that of the Open age group teams. And in some cases you might have believed there was more at stake than just a victory over a competitor school

It once more underscored just how important sport is to children — and how much they have missed being able to get stuck into whatever is their sport of choice because of the pandemic

Hopefully we are well on the way to normal transmission being resumed — which, for the kids, means once again they get to enjoy a steady diet of outdoor activities where they can let off some steam and have plenty of fun with their mates

(The Sports Office now has all the images from last weekend and these should be uploaded to Schoolbox either today/tomorrow)

But it was a great weekend of rugby that effectively closed down the 2020 season — a season which we will long remember given how different it was to any that had gone before

I am hopeful of having all images from the Riverview matches with the Sports Office tomorrow afternoon but, with my being on photography duty this Wednesday, I am not confident of them being loaded on my website until some time on Thursday (likely in the afternoon the way things are going). I shall keep you posted
