Whilst the season has been slipping by the 2nds ba Whilst the season has been slipping by the 2nds basketball team has been quietly going about its business

After dropping the opening round — a match where they were seemingly in control for most of the game but somehow found a way to lose by six points — the boys have been in rather good form, winning all but one of the next seven

As the season goes into its hiatus they sit only one game adrift of equal leaders, Riverview and Newington. Not a bad place to be starting from when things swing back into action again
Saturday saw the basketballers finish their year o Saturday saw the basketballers finish their year on a high note with two hard fought victories over Shore, results which put them in good shape for the challenges that lie ahead when school resumes next February

The two teams sit in 3rd place as we enter the break — and, if they are to improve on those positions, both will need to chase down Newington and Riverview upon the resumption of hostilities

Unfortunately they have ten weeks to wait before they can take up the challenge
What a great way to finish off proceedings for 202 What a great way to finish off proceedings for 2023! Three matches — and three wins to take us out

So to wrap up —

Scots 1st Basketball defeated Shore 78 68 to finish in 3rd place on the table going into the break. Undefeated Newington lead the competition with Riverview having lost one match in 2nd

Once again the 2nds had to dig deep and come from behind to defeat Shore 55 46. That win sees them in 3rd place as well, a game behind both Riverview and Newington

As for the 1st XI other results went their way and they find themselves sitting atop the table with one loss; King’s is 2nd with two losses whilst Joey’s is 3rd, having lost three. In yesterday’s match Scots defeated Shore by 5 wickets — and the highlight was (aside from the skipper being back amongst the runs) that some of the scaffolding around the new building has been taken down. Clean backgrounds for the New Year? Doesn’t look like it unfortunately as there still appears to be much construction to come. Oh well!
Tomorrow sees Shore make the journey across the Br Tomorrow sees Shore make the journey across the Bridge to Bellevue Hill for the first match of the second half of the season — but also the last match before the summer break commences; I guess that makes some sense

And all three matches have a back story —

1st Basketball - both sides are equal third on the ladder making a win imperative for each

2nd Basketball - it’s 3rd vs 4th with a win to Scots giving them some breathing space over the chasers; a loss puts them in a fight for 3rd

1st XI — Scots finds itself sitting atop the table level with King’s; a win would cement that position and put them at least two matches clear of 3rd whereas a loss would see them drop a notch and at risk of having a fight on their hands to stay there next term

The rain of earlier in the week seems to have cleared so, hopefully, we get a full round in to finish the year off

And given it is Friday, as usual, it’s a replay of the action from the last time the two schools met
It’s been a busy week — lots of photos to sor It’s been a busy week — lots of photos to sort through and cull, edit, send off to various interested parties. And it has been lots of fun too, particularly given the variety of sports involved — my first swimming carnival of the season along with plenty of basketball and cricket

But what that has meant is I haven’t been able to find time to upload anything to the website — hopefully that will happen at some point tomorrow which, if it does, I will confirm on these pages

In the meantime it is the mid-week mash up with photos from last weekend’s GPS basketball and cricket vs Sydney Boys
The 2nds extended their recent winning streak by d The 2nds extended their recent winning streak by defeating Sydney Boys 58 30 — their third victory on the trot — and, as a result, remain just one game behind the joint leaders, Riverview and Newington

This weekend’s round against Shore should provide a stern test for the boys given their loss after looking to have the game in the bag when they first played in Round 1

Ahead of the Christmas break it should be a cracker match to finish proceedings for the term. (Get that? Cracker. Christmas. Dad joke)
The 1sts started the season with three wins on the The 1sts started the season with three wins on the trot then, despite playing some great basketball, lost the next three, a couple of which could easily have gone the other way

Therefore, with the season at the half way mark and the win/loss record all square, last Saturday was an important game for the boys — and they came out all guns blazing against Sydney Boys High and hardly took their foot off the pedal (if that is, indeed, basketball terminology) as they ran out winners 91 53

A great boost as they turn the corner and head for home (albeit with an 8 week break for the Christmas holidays in the middle of it!)
Three wins from three matches which indicates that Three wins from three matches which indicates that despite the weather being, as they say, inclement the cricketers did eventually manage to get out of the sheds and onto the pitch

And pitch is probably the operative word — although the sport being played should have been rugby rather than one for flanneled fools given the condition of the ground in places. A few of the local supermarkets will face a run on OMO and bleach this week if the gear is to reclaim its pre - match status of being called “whites” before next Saturday

Sawdust. Rags for drying the ball. Super soppers. Sweaters. (Relatively) high ISO’s. But, most importantly, a result

Scots won the truncated game — somehow they managed to sneak 35 overs in for each side — by 50 runs with the highlight being “Pup’s” undefeated century — including a hat trick of sixes that helped get things going after a slow start

Over in the relative warmth and comfort of the basketball court the 1sts returned to the winners list with a 91 53 win; the seconds kept their win streak going with a 58 30 victory

And so ends the first half of the season with all three sides well placed as we head into the back half. Next Saturday Shore visit Scots but, given the way the weather looks, the cricketers may yet again struggle to get out of the blocks; time will tell
This week marks the half way point of the 2023/24 This week marks the half way point of the 2023/24 summer sport season and, given they have not yet been played, Sydney Boys High awaits

Whilst there will certainly be two basketball matches tomorrow there remains a doubt as to whether the weather (is that phrasing correct?) may play a part and cause the cricketers to end up sitting around thumb twiddling

Either way, it has been a good start to the season for all three teams with plenty of positives to take into the second half of the fixture — along with some learnings too

After a couple of days of being AWOL I am back on deck and, therefore, Flashback Friday can hit the streets once more and provide you with a good start to the weekend.
