What a way to finish things off Cancellations due What a way to finish things off

Cancellations due to waterlogged pitches, yellow cards, plenty of tries, a match that was in the balance until almost the death, a Premiership — and, above all, a day of some cracking rugby

The disappointment being that it all came to an end far too soon

So it’s time to clean the mud off the boots, put them in the cupboard for another six months and start to think about the athletics season and beyond
This rugby season was different insofar that it ma This rugby season was different insofar that it marked a return to times more like those of years long past. We had a full slate of matches — and we had crowds. How good it was to be able to play in front of cheering supporters once more and not have to worry about rugby balls being sanitised and faces being masked

But as they say, all good things must come to an end and, just like that, it will be over for another year as tomorrow we close out proceedings with Scots taking on Shore at Bellevue Hill

And whilst we are at it, spare a thought for many of the boys for whom it will be the last time they run out for their school. Reasons to be sad but, above all, reasons to celebrate. Head on down, celebrate the season with them — but also celebrate them
I can’t recall which rugby player coined the now I can’t recall which rugby player coined the now oft quoted expression “I’ll be back” but this past weekend showed how much better it is when everyone else is as well

The noise, the atmosphere, and even the on-field action ramped up another level or five as a result — sometimes it was so rowdy I found it hard to hear the motor drive on my camera

Which goes to prove that sport and supporters are meant to go together — and long may it continue to be so
Early last Saturday I found myself back at Rivervi Early last Saturday I found myself back at Riverview where the grounds had dried out considerably — although not enough to prevent the traditional Cross Country course from being altered to reflect the recent downpours

Once upon a time I photographed cross country races almost weekly but last weekend was the first occasion this year I was able to take to the bushes, hide behind trees, and get my ankles nipped at by off-the-leash dogs — fortunately the weather was just perfect for a bit of bush bashing too

After a most enjoyable morning — certainly way better than the previous Saturday afternoon! — it was back to the east for a full slate of rugby. A long day — which is normal for me — but, even though I jump into bed exhausted as a result, I still cannot believe how lucky I am to spend half my weekend doing what I do — and I guess it would only be better if I was still able to pull the boots on
Plenty of tries; lots of bone jarring tackles; and Plenty of tries; lots of bone jarring tackles; and some gut busting runs — Saturday had it all

A few more images from Scots v Joey’s on the weekend
What a difference a week makes. Wet, muddy, and ap What a difference a week makes. Wet, muddy, and appalling last Saturday; bright sunshine, dry, and, relatively, warm (so much so I found myself shedding a layer in the afternoon!) yesterday. And what a big day it was too

A combination of it being the annual Back to Scots weekend, class reunions, and a 1st XV game against Joey’s meant the crowds were back in full force. (I gave up counting at around 3,000) Lots of noise; the atmosphere was fantastic; and the rugby was an absolute ripper

The only downer was, just as they did in the trial, Joey’s coming from behind in the last few minutes to win 19 - 15
A big weekend of sport looms as the school welcome A big weekend of sport looms as the school welcomes Old Boys for the traditional “Back to Scots” round

This year it is the undefeated Joey’s turn to travel to Bellevue Hill for the privilege of playing in front of the most passionate Scots crowd of not only the season but, possibly, also the year

When the sides last met in the trial games it was Joey’s who emerged victorious 26 24 — but only after some heroics late in the game — suggesting we are in for a cracker

And unlike last week’s atrocious conditions, the weather Gods are looking after us with the forecast for an almost perfect day

So, to whet the appetite, a few more from last weekend’s matches at Riverview
